Some of the controversy had to do with Mayor Stapleton himself. So much so that in 1944, the airport got renamed Stapleton Airfield in honor of the mayor’s abundant support. He truly saw great potential in Stapleton as the leading airport in Colorado. One of its strongest supporters was the Denver Mayor at the time, Benjamin F. Hart Library & Research Center, History ColoradoĮven during its growth, Stapleton Airport was a source of debate. This new air control tower would end up being one of the only buildings left standing after the demolition of the rest of the airport. It replaced the old octagonal tower that had been an iconic feature of the airport up until that point. In June of 1953, the new $250,000 six story control tower was finished. It became the nation’s 6 th busiest airport by 1976 which continued to put pressure on the airport in order to keep up with the ever-growing demand. Stapleton airport experienced a lot of expansion and growth during a relatively short period of time. By 1945, the airport was seeing 40-50 flights a day, and this is around the same time it began receiving its first noise complaints. This probably explains why it became Colorado’s largest and busiest airport. Located only 7 miles from downtown Denver, it was a convenient location as the commercial flight industry began to grow. It was built on plains in an area known beforehand as Rattlesnake Hollow.
It only had three airlines and was more of a “glorified post office”. Air travel was only just beginning to grow in the United States, so while it wasn’t the only airport in Colorado, Stapleton Airport was more so marketed for recreation and mail delivery.
When it opened in October 1929, Stapleton Airport was originally named Denver Municipal Airport.
